Political System


Morocco adopted its first Constitution in March 1962, which has been revised in 1970, 1972, 1992, and in September 1996.

Monarchy has a deeply-rooted and central role in Morocco and has always shaped its political evolution, economic prosperity and cultural enlightenment. In modern times, Morocco evolved to a constitutional monarchy under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI since 1999. 

Morocco has a bicameral Parliament, consisting of the House of Representatives (lower house) and the House of Counsellors (upper house) Major Political Reforms Implementation of freer and fairer elections and adoption of a new law on political parties;

Significant advances in the area of human rights:

the restructuring of the Human Rights Consultative Council, the creation of Diwan Al Madhalim (Ombudsman), the appointment of Equity and Reconciliation Commission to investigate human rights past abuses, Adoption of the new Family Code, which consecrates the principles of equity and equality between spouses in terms of rights and duties while preserving children's rights and human dignity, Liberalization of the audiovisual sector and adoption of the press code (Haute Autorite de la Communication Audiovisuelle ).
