Participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in the High level international Conference on the Sahel Region

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Morocco, Mr. Nasser Bourita took part to the High level international Conference on the Sahel Region held in Brussels, which brought together the Heads of State and Government of the European Union and the G5 Sahel countries (Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger), as well as representatives of international organizations and other countries concerned.

In this Conference, participants tackled ways to strengthen coordination on security-related strategic issues and reinforce effectiveness regarding sustainable development aids in the region.

This event has also allowed the mobilization of 414 million euros, a sum that will wholly be allocated to operations in support of the G5 Sahel Joint Anti-Terrorism Force.

Mr. Bourita highlighted that Morocco participated in this Conference to show its solidarity and commitment with the countries of the region.

In this regard, the Minister recalled that through the dozens of visits paid by HM the King in the countries of the Sahel, Morocco has developed a substantial and mutually beneficial cooperation, particularly in the areas of food security , border control, social development, military training, technical cooperation, security and intelligence cooperation, in addition to training of imams.

Mr. Bourita noted that Morocco hails the G5-Sahel initiative which is a relevant response to the precarious situation in the region.

On the sidelines of this Conference, Mr. Bourita held a meeting with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Mrs. Federica Mogherini. This meeting is part of the regular contacts held with European leaders to exchange on various regional and international themes of common interest.
