Morocco initiates a responsible operation to restore civil and commercial traffic at El Guerguarate crossing

Faced with the serious and unacceptable provocations of the polisario militias in the buffer zone of El Guergarate in the Moroccan Sahara, Morocco has decided to act, in accordance with its attributions, its duties and in full compliance with international legality.

Indeed, Morocco, after having committed itself to the greatest restraint, had no other choice apart from assuming its responsibilities in order to put an end to the deadlock generated by such provocative acts and to restore the freedom of civil and commercial movement. The operation has been carried out in a civil manner without any clashes or threat to the safety of civilians.  The Guerguerat Zone is now completely secured by the setting up of a security cordon, ensuring the flow of goods and people through the crossing between the two border posts.

After taking note of the engagement of the Royal Armed Forces, the polisario militiamen voluntarily set fire to the tent camp they had established and fled in Jeeps and trucks towards the East and South, in front of the MINURSO observers.

The Kingdom of Morocco had alerted and regularly informed the UN Secretary General and senior UN officials, as well as several neighbouring states about these extremely serious developments, in addition to giving the necessary time to the good offices of the United Nations and MINURSO to push the militiamen to leave the buffer zone.

However, appeals from Minurso and the UN Secretary General, as well as the interventions of several members of the Security Council, have unfortunately been unsuccessful.

The provocations made by the polisario and its militias, during many periods since 2016, constituted premeditated acts of destabilization, violating the status of the buffer zone and the provisions of the UN Security Council Resolutions (notably 2414 and 2440).

Besides, such actions undermine the chances of any relaunch of the political process sought by the international community and exhaust the chances of any diplomatic solution. The polisario alone assumes full responsibility and the full consequences of these acts.

The Kingdom of Morocco remains firmly attached to the preservation of the ceasefire, as the operation carried out by the Royal Armed Forces aims precisely to consolidate the ceasefire by preventing the recurrence of such serious and inadmissible acts that violate the military agreement and threaten regional security and stability.
