The Moroccan experience in the field of religious freedom

At the invitation of the US Secretary of State, Mr. Mike Pompeo, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Nasser Bourita took par to the first Ministerial Conference for the promotion of religious freedom organised by the US State Department from the 24 through the 26 of July 2018.

On this occasion, Mr. Bourita underlined that the Moroccan experience in religious freedom represents an excellent model thanks to the fundamental role played by the institution of the commandership of believers.

According to the Minister, the centrality of the institution of the Commandership of Believers distinguishes the Kingdom of Morocco in its geographical and geopolitical neighborhood and provides therefore a unique approach to the issue of religious freedom.

Besides, Mr. Bourita considers that the Kingdom is the only country in the Arab-Muslim world to emphasize in its constitution that the Hebrew component is an important dimension of Moroccan identity.

The Minister also pointed out to the fact that Morocco, thanks to the vision of His Majesty the King, is conducting several actions aimed at ensuring the harmonious religious coexistence.

The Kingdom is in fact home to the largest Jewish community and to a large number of synagogues and Jewish cemeteries, as well as to many churches open to Christians.

In addition, the Minister noted that the preservation of religious freedom is incompatible with radicalization. According to him, it must be exercised within the framework of respect for other religions and the legal speceficities of each country .
