The Crans Montana Forum 2018 held in Dakhla

The Crans Montana Forum on Africa & South-South Cooperation took place, in Dakhla (Morocco) from 15 to 20 March 2018. This edition, which witnessed the presence of thousands of partcipants representing more than 100 countries, focused on strengthening solidarity, the economic, social and environmental Development of the Continent.

This Forum has been marked by the Royal Message addressed by HM King Mohammed VI in which He stressed that Dakhla, where the event was held, has special significance in the history of Morocco. The Sovereign considers that thanks to its unique position, it serves as a strategic link between the Kingdom and regions and countries further south in Africa.

He added that the Crans Montana Forum has developed considerably and gained renown with each meeting. It is according to Him a must-attend international event that brings together high-level political decision-makers, representatives of the business community, intellectuals, civil society activists from all walks of life and opinion makers from all corners of the world.

HM the King noted that the relevance of the themes addressed, coupled with the quality and diverse backgrounds of the participants, are valuable factors. They make it possible to enrich the debate and explore new horizons, enabling the Forum to serve as a powerhouse for proposals.

Moreover, the former French President, Nicholas Sarkozy, guest of honour of this edition, hailed Morocco's efforts in the field of South-South Cooperation highlighting that the Moroccan model has proven to be succesful on the regional and continental level.

In the Framework of this edition, an exceptional International Conference focusing on Asia-Africa Partnerships & the Silk Road has been held. Five years after the launch of the “One Belt, One Road” initiative by the Chinese President Xi Jingping, African Growth is increasingly boosted by global investments and new partnerships with Asia. Meanwhile, Morocco is emerging as a new gateway to the Silk Road thanks to its strategic commercial position between Europe and Africa.

Besides, a Session of the Crans Montana Forum on Africa & South-South Cooperation was held in Dakhla to address the issue of Migration flows management.

This Session highlighted the necessity to coordinate innovative actions at the continent level, notably regarding political development, employment and human rights to implement a true African approach.

The Speakers and participants of this Session explored strategies that need to be implemented by African countries at the Continental level to better ensure Migration flows management and concrete actions in favor of Youth to promote self-fulfillment and reduce “Brain Drain”.

In the framework of this event, Dr. Obiageli Katryn Ezekwesili, Economic Advisor for AEDPI and former Africa Vice President of the World Bank, and Mr. Sun Xiansheng, Secretary General of the International Energy Forum, were presented with the Crans Montana Forum’s Gold Medal.

Moreover, the FONDATION AWARD 2018 was presented to Mrs. Debbie Remengesau, First Lady of the Republic of Palau, Mr. Mustapha Cissé Lo, Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament, and Mr. Michel Martelly, Former President of the Republic of Haiti.

Talented young decision makers from around the World were officially appointed New Leaders for Tomorrow 2018 during the Crans Montana Forum on Africa and South-South Cooperation. Among them, some 13 Sahrawi young people from the Moroccan provinces of Dakhla and Laayoune.
