Celebration of the 45th anniversary of the Glorious Green March

Morocco is celebrating on November 6, 2020, the 45th anniversary of the Glorious Green March which constitutes an occasion to recall one of the most outstanding achievements of the Kingdom’s history under the Alaouite Throne and a brilliant manner of recovering the country’s sovereignty. Following the decision of the International Court of Justice in The Hague (Netherlands) which gave its advisory opinion on the Sahara by confirming the existence of legal ties and allegiance between the throne and the tribes of the region, Late King Hassan II announced the organization of the Green March to concretize the recovery of the Kingdom’s southern provinces. In fact, Morocco regained, on November 6, 1975, the southern Sahara provinces from the protectorate through a peaceful Green March of 350,000 strong-willed patriots. This March has allowed Morocco to complete the recovery process of its territorial integrity and enabled equally the Sahrawi people to rejoin their beloved motherland. The peaceful march forced the withdrawal of the colonizer and was followed few days later by the signing of the Madrid Agreements by virtue of which the southern territory has been handed back to its rightful claimant, Morocco, which scored a historical, diplomatic victory.Since then, Morocco spared no efforts in providing this important region with all the necessary tools to bolster its social and economic development. Indeed, His Majesty King Mohammed VI announced a global development model for the region, designed to ensure the complete and final integration of the southern provinces to the unified motherland and to strengthen the role and influence of the Sahara as an economic hub and as a link between Morocco and its African neighborhood. This year’s celebration comes at a very important moment in which more than 18 countries have recently voiced their unwavering support to the Marocanity of the Sahara by proceeding to the inauguration of their respective Consulates Generals in the southern cities of Dakhla and Laayoune. This celebration comes equally few days after the adoption of the UN Security Council Resolution 2548 which enshrined, once again, the pre-eminence of the Moroccan initiative for Autonomy in its southern regions, providing a viable solution to put an end to the artificial conflict around Moroccan Sahara
