Illegal Immigration: Madrid Calls for Increasing EU's Support to Morocco

The Spanish minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, Josep Borrell, called for an increase in the European Union's (EU) support to Morocco in order to tackle the phenomenon of illegal immigration.

"Morocco is not well treated in terms of the aid granted by the European Union - for the fight against illegal immigration," the Spanish minister told the Joint Committee of Congress of Deputies-Senate for the EU on Wednesday.

Turkey receives, in this context, 6 billion Euros from the EU, while Morocco receives only about 50 million Euros, he pointed out.

The Moroccan authorities have decided to repatriate all the sub-Saharan migrants who tried, on Sunday morning, to storm across the Spain-occupied city of Melillia to their countries of origin, the Interior Ministry said Monday.

Public forces intervened to foil this assault attempt and arrested 141 illegal immigrants, the ministry pointed out in a statement, adding that 12 soldiers and a member of the auxiliary forces were wounded during this operation before being rushed into a hospital in the city of Nador to receive the necessary health care.

The European Commission for Democracy through Law praised, on Friday in Venice, the constitutional and judicial reforms initiated by HM King Mohammed VI with "wisdom and insight".

President of the European Commission, Gianni Buquicchio, stressed at the 116th General Assembly of the Commission that "the Constitution of the Kingdom of Morocco and the organic laws relating to the independence of the judiciary are fully in line with European and international standards".
