Morocco, South Australia Examine Cooperation Opportunities in Different Sectors

The Moroccan ambassador in Canberra, Karim Medrek, held a series of meetings with South Australian officials on 15-16 August on opportunities for bilateral cooperation in various sectors.

During his meeting with the State's governor, Hieu Van Le, the Moroccan diplomat praised trade relations between the Kingdom and South Australia, in the agricultural field as well as cooperation in high-tech sectors, such as research in water resources management.

Cooperation between Moroccan and Spanish intelligence services is "excellent", stressed director of the central bureau for judiciary investigations (BCIJ), Abdelhak Khiame.

In an interview with the Spanish news agency EFE, Khiame announced a new strategy to prevent any risk of radicalization of Moroccans living abroad, praising in this regard the excellent cooperation between Moroccan and Spanish intelligence services.

Speaker of the House of Representatives (lower house), Habib El Malki, represented HM King Mohammed VI, Wednesday in Asunción, at the inauguration ceremony of Paraguay’s new president, Mario Abdo Benitez.

The ceremony took place at Palacio de Lopez in the presence of several head of States, notably Argentina’s Mauricio Macri, Brazilian Michel Temer, Uruguayan Tabaré Vázquez, Bolivian Evo Morales, Colombian Ivan Duque, as well as numerous delegations representing 94 countries.

Morocco is taking part in the 14th edition of the Panama Book Fair which opened Tuesday in the Panamanian capital and will run until Aug. 19.

The Kingdom participates in this cultural event with a stand set up by the Moroccan Embassy in Panama, exhibiting more than 200 books in Spanish concerning the history of the Kingdom and the different aspects of the Moroccan civilization culturally, socially and economically as well as the country's tourist assets and its relations with Latin American countries.

Growth Rate to Stand at 3.2% in 2019

The national growth rate will stand at 3.2% and the deficit at 3% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2019, wrote the note on the 2019 draft appropriation bill, elaborated by the Head of Government's office.

The note also provides for the continuation of the dynamics of the non-agricultural sectors, which will post a value added growth of 3.7%, versus 3.3% in 2018, provided that the price oil barrel is 68 dollars and cereal crop reaches 70 million quintals.

World Top Container Ports: Tanger Med, Largest Container Port in Africa

Tanger Med is the largest container port in Africa and ranks 45th in the world, according to the latest ranking of World Top Container Ports issued by the specialised magazine "Container Management".

With a capacity of 3 million containers, Tanger Med 1 Port handled 3,312,409 TEUs in 2017, Tanger Med Port Authority said in a release. TEU measures a ship’s cargo carrying capacity, and the measurement is equivalent to 20 feet in length and 8 feet in height.

This performance enabled Tanger Med Port to move up by 6 spots in 2017 and to rank 45th in the world.

Tourist Arrivals Up 10% in Morocco by End of June

A total of 5.1 million tourists visited Morocco in the first half of 2018, up 10% over the same period a year earlier, according to the Tourism Observatory.

The number of foreign tourists has increased by 17%, and the arrivals of Moroccan expatriates have increased by 1%, said the Observatory which has just published its statistics on Moroccan tourism for June 2018.

Morocco's Net International Reserves Up 9.7%

Morocco's net international reserves amounted to 225.2 billion dirhams until August 3, 2018, recording a 9.7% year-on-year increase, Morocco's central bank (Bank Al-Maghrib) said.

During the week of August 2-8, Bank Al-Maghrib injected 69.8 billion dirhams.

As for the interbank rate, it remained at 2.27%, while the average trading volume fell from 4.4 billion Dirhams the week before to 4.1 billion Dirhams, the source added.

During the same period, the Dirham appreciated by 0.8% against the Euro and depreciated by 0.05% against the Dollar.

Migration: Madrid and Berlin Call on EU to Step up Cooperation with Morocco

  Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, and German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, stressed on Saturday in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Spain) the need to intensify cooperation between the European Union (EU) and Morocco in the area of migration.

"Morocco is suffering from the pressure of African sub-Saharan migratory flows and we need to strengthen our cooperation not only with countries of origin but also with transit countries such as the Kingdom," Sanchez said at a press conference following his meeting with the German leader.

Following the publication in several newspapers of pictures of the Pope blessing children presented as Sahrawis, the Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See to the Kingdom of Morocco points out, in a statement received Saturday by MAP, that "the position of the Holy See on the Sahara issue has not changed," while condemning the political exploitation of these pictures.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Habib El Malki represented, Tuesday in Bogota, HM King Mohammed VI in the official inauguration ceremony of new Colombian President Ivan Duque Marquez.

The ceremony was attended by several Heads of State and Government, political leaders, several figures, as well as the diplomatic corps accredited in Bogotá.
