Sahara Issue: UN Personal Envoy to Start Saturday a Tour in the Region

The UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for the Sahara, Horst Kohler, will start Saturday a ten-day visit to the region, the UN announced on Thursday.

"I can confirm that Horst Kohler, the Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for the Sahara, will be touring the region again from 23 June to 1 July 2018," said UN spokesman Farhan Haq.

The visit aims to "deepen Kohler's understanding of the reality on the ground, and discuss how to move forward in the UN-led political process, in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2414," he underlined.

Abuja: Morocco Participates in 7th Meeting of CEN-SAD Defense Ministers

On high Royal instructions, a Moroccan delegation led by minister delegate to the head of government for National Defense Administration, Abdeltif Loudyi, took part in the 7th meeting of ministers of Defense of the Community of Sahel- Saharan States (CEN-SAD), held in Abuja on June 20- 21.

The theme of this edition is the consolidation of achievements made in the fight against terrorism through solidarity and development actions.

Loudyi delivered a speech on this occasion, in which he highlighted the multidimensional strategy led by Morocco to counter terrorism.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State to Visit Morocco at the End of June

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, John J. Sullivan, will visit Morocco at the end of June, as part of a regional tour, said Thursday the U.S Department of State.

During his stay in Morocco, the Deputy Secretary "will meet with senior government officials to discuss a range of political, economic, and security issues," the same source said in a statement.

“Morocco's important contributions to the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS” will be on the agenda of these discussions, the Department of State noted.

Official Meets With Spanish Minister of Civil Service

Mohamed Benabdelkader, Minister delegate for Administration Reform and Civil Service, had a meeting, on Wednesday in Madrid, with Meritxell Batet, Spanish Minister for Territorial Policy and Civil Service, on several matters of shared interest.

During this meeting, the two parties discussed the good cooperation between the two departments and means and ways to further it through expertise sharing, particularly in territorial and administrative decentralization, an area where Spain made headway.

The Morocco-European Union Joint Parliamentary Committee held, Thursday, its ninth annual meeting at the European Parliament in Brussels, with a view to consolidating the strategic partnership between the Kingdom and the EU.

Participatory Banks in Morocco: 71 Agencies Created, over 1 Billion Dirham of Loans Granted

Since their launch in July 2017, participatory banks, currently numbering 71 branches, have reached a credit volume of 1.1 billion dirhams, said the Wali of Morocco's Central Bank (Bank Al-Maghrib), Abdellatif Jouahri.

"Currently, Morocco counts over 71 participatory agencies (…) and they are constantly multiplying," Jouahri told a press conference at the end of the second quarterly meeting in 2018 of the Bank’s Board, adding that the volume of credits granted by these new entities, since their creation, has amounted to 1.1 billion dirham.

Tourist Arrivals in Morocco Up 12% at the end of April (Tourism Observatory)

A total of 3.4 million tourists visited Morocco between January and April 2018, up 12% compared to the same period a year earlier, according to the Tourism Observatory.

The number of foreign tourists increased by 19%, while the arrivals of Moroccans living abroad grew by 1%, said the Observatory in its statistics on Moroccan tourism for the month of April 2018.

This increase concerned the main tourist markets, in particular Italy (18%), Germany (+14%), France (11%), the United Kingdom and Holland (10% each), the Observatory noted.

Child Labour Affects 247K Kids Aged 7-17 in Morocco, HCP

247,000 out of 7,049,000 kids aged 7-17 are involved in child labour in Morocco, according to the national survey on employment by the High Commission for Planning (HCP).

In a statement on the World Day Against Child Labour, the HCP said that 162,000 of these children practice a dangerous trade, which means 2.3% of them.

76.3% of the said children are from rural areas, 81% of them are males, and 73% are aged 15-17, said the same source, adding that their number in urban areas is 38,000, which equals 85.6% of the children working in cities (45,000).

Morocco will put forward the clock one hour (GMT+1) on Sunday, June 17, 2018 at 02:00 a.m., said the administration and civil service reform ministry.

This decision is an implementation of decree N° 2-13-781 dated Sept. 28, 2013, and head of government's decree N° 3-14-18 dated May 7, 2018 on changing time, the ministry added in a statement.
